Core idea

The infrastructure industry is facing enormous challenges while simultaneously losing managerial competencies. Infrastructure industry – roads, rail, water and energy supply, information and communication infrastructures – form the backbone of modern society. Having to negotiate energy transitions increases the pressure to invest successfully in new technologies, amplified by rising pension costs. The issue is compounded by insecurity regarding organisations’ own assets, resources and products. The industry needs contemporary managers who can apply managerial theory to the organisation’s challenges through teaching them the required methods, for example the development and application of subject-appropriate taxonomies. The goal is to enable managers to exercise their acquired knowledge on a daily basis as opposed to a potentially disruptive improvement project to allow for a more homogenous change in (existing) attitudes and behaviours.

CAS MIA aims to devise and advance a new profession: the Infrastructure Asset Manager as a general manager for the asset-intensive infrastructure industry.

Program Structure

CAS MIA is a part-time course in English and German designed to run parallel to the participant’s professional activities. Building on classic and innovative infrastructure management MBA studies, the course teaches fundamental theories, and an evidence-based management system is developed, using a current project from the participant’s organisation, allowing immediate practical application of the acquired knowledge and development of customised taxonomies for that organisation. A core competency is to critically reflect on theory and practice.

What sets CAS MIA apart?

There are very few nationally recognised and accredited advanced studies for the infrastructure industry. CAS MIA is the only program covering all areas of infrastructure: road, rail, water-, electricity and gas supply, information and communication infrastructure networks. It is the only course applying a Business School Model, collaborates both with leading universities and industry representatives, engages alumni as lecturers, and awards 16 ECTS points.

Quality Assurance and Accreditation

CAS MIA is the only advanced qualification program for the infrastructure industry with international FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation) Accreditation globally, attesting the program’s outstanding quality. It certifies an above-average interconnection of theory and practice as well as the inclusion of international and intercultural aspects. CAS MIA was developed upon request from industry in collaboration with ETH Zurich. The pilot was established at the University of St. Gallen and is by now taught in cooperation with several other universities. The program corresponds to the qualification framework for the Swiss and European Higher Education Level 7, conforms with ISO5500X and is an internationally protected trademark. CAS MIA combines triple accredited MBA teachings with asset management.
